Background

Since the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in Johannesburg in 2002, all countries in the Southeast Asia region had adopted Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) as the way forward in ensuring sustainable development. GWP-SEA through its biannual Southeast Asia Water Forum (SEAWF) has provided the platform for all the major water stakeholders and partners from various disciplines of the water sector within the region to share experiences and lessons learned in the implementation of IWRM.

The First SEAWF was successfully held on 17th to 21st November 2003 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The main theme was “Strengthening Regional Capacity Through Best Practices in Integrated Water Resources Management”. This was followed by the Second SEAWF held on 29th August to 3rd September 2005 in Bali, Indonesia with the main theme of “Building Regional Commitment Towards Enhancement of Integrated Water Management & Effective Water Governance”. The Malaysian Water Partnership (MyWP) has been given the honor to organize the Third SEAWF in year 2007.

Objectives

  • To take stock of the implementation of IWRM in the member countries (special emphasis on the declaration of previous forums)
  • To promote and share knowledge and experiences in the implementation of IWRM among partners from various disciplines of the water sector. Link up with Asia Pacific Water Summit in December 2007.
